Get the Semrush free trial and unlock every paid feature

I have run this trial three times across client work and my own blog. Here is the honest version: how long it lasts, whether a card is needed, and the exact 7 day plan I use to pull real value out of it.

Which trial fits you? ๐ŸŽฏ

Two quick questions. I will tell you which plan to start the trial on, and why.

1. What are you working on right now?

2. What do you want the trial to answer?

๐Ÿ˜ค The part nobody says out loud

Why people search for a Semrush free trial in the first place

I searched the same thing in 2022. My reasons were boring and practical, and I am guessing yours are close to one of these.

๐Ÿ’ธ

The price makes you pause

Pro sits near 140 dollars a month. When your blog earns nothing yet, that number feels heavy and you want proof before you commit.

Fix: run the trial and judge the tool on your own data, not on a demo video.
๐Ÿฅฑ

Free tools keep guessing

You paste your domain into three free checkers and get three different numbers. None of them tell you what to fix on Monday morning.

Fix: one site audit inside the trial gives you a ranked list of real errors.
๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ

Your competitor is beating you and you do not know how

They publish less than you and still rank. Without keyword and backlink data you are only guessing at the reason.

Fix: the keyword gap report shows their winning pages in about two minutes.
๐Ÿ˜ฌ

You are scared of a surprise charge

Trials that quietly bill you on day eight have burned most of us once. So the card box makes you close the tab.

Fix: cancel inside the dashboard on day five and keep access until the last day.
โณ

Seven days sounds too short

You open the tool, click around, get lost in twelve menus, and the week is gone with nothing to show.

Fix: follow the day by day plan below and you will finish with four exports.
๐Ÿคท

Pro or Guru, nobody explains the difference

The pricing page lists numbers like 500 and 1500 with no context, so most people pick blindly.

Fix: the picker at the top of this page answers it in two clicks.
๐ŸŽ Inside the trial

What the free trial actually unlocks

This is not a stripped down demo. During the trial you are on the paid plan, with the same limits a paying customer gets.

๐Ÿ”

Keyword Magic Tool

Pull thousands of long tail ideas with volume, difficulty and intent. This is where I build a three month content calendar in one sitting.

๐Ÿฉบ

Full site audit

Crawl your whole site and get errors sorted by how much they matter. Broken links, slow pages, thin content, all in one list.

๐ŸฅŠ

Competitor gap reports

Put your domain against two rivals and see every keyword they rank for and you do not. It is the fastest content plan I know.

๐Ÿ”—

Backlink analytics

See who links to them, filter by authority, and export a clean outreach list before the trial ends.

๐Ÿ“Š

Position tracking

Add your keywords, pick your country and city, and watch daily movement with a visibility score you can screenshot for clients.

๐Ÿค–

AI visibility tools

The newer toolkit shows whether AI answers mention your brand. Worth a look now that search results carry AI summaries.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ My trial routine

The 7 day plan I follow so the trial is never wasted

The first time I tried Semrush I spent four days clicking menus and learned almost nothing. Now I run this order every single time. Each step takes under an hour.

Day 1: set up the project and start the crawl

Add your domain as a project, connect Google Analytics and Search Console, then start the site audit. The crawl runs while you do other things, so start it early in the morning.

Day 2: read the audit and fix the top five errors

Ignore the long list. Sort by errors, not warnings, and handle the first five. On my blog that was broken internal links and two pages missing titles. It took 40 minutes.

Day 3: build the keyword list

Open Keyword Magic, type your main topic, then filter for difficulty under 30 and volume over 100. Export it. That file alone is worth more than the trial.

Day 4: run the gap report against two competitors

Drop in the two sites that always beat you. The missing and weak tabs show exactly which posts to write next. I usually find 20 to 30 clear targets here.

Day 5: export backlinks and cancel the renewal

Pull their referring domains and save the list. Then cancel the renewal in your account settings. You keep full access until the last day, and the reminder stress disappears.

Day 6: set up position tracking and write one brief

Add 20 keywords to the tracker so you have a baseline. Then use the content template on one keyword and write the brief you will actually use next week.

Day 7: decide with evidence

Look at your four exports. If you can point at real work you would not have done otherwise, paying makes sense. If not, you walk away with the exports and no bill.

Where Semrush annoyed me, honestly

I would rather you know this now than feel tricked on day three.

๐Ÿ˜ตThe dashboard is crowded. Give yourself an hour to stop feeling lost.
๐Ÿ’ณA card is required. Nothing is charged, but the box does put people off.
๐Ÿ“‰Local keyword volume in smaller countries can look thin compared to bigger markets.
๐ŸงพOne seat per plan. Extra users cost extra, which agencies feel quickly.

None of that stopped me from using it. The keyword database and the gap reports are the strongest I have used, and I have paid for Ahrefs, Ubersuggest and Moz at different points. The trial is the cheapest way to find out whether it clicks for you too.

Semrush free trial questions

Short answers, based on running the trial and the paid plan myself.

Yes. Semrush runs a 7 day free trial on the Pro and Guru plans, and partner links like the one on this page often stretch it to 14 days on Guru. You get the paid dashboard, not a cut down demo.

Yes, a card is needed to verify the account and stop people opening trial after trial. Nothing is charged while the trial runs. If you cancel before the last day, the charge never happens.

There is a free account. It gives you 10 searches a day, one project, 100 tracked keywords and a limited site audit. It is fine for a quick look, but the trial is what shows you the real product.

Open your profile menu, go to Subscription info, then choose to cancel the renewal. It takes under a minute and you keep access until the trial date ends. Set a phone reminder for day 5 or day 12 so you never forget.

Pick Pro if you run one or two sites and mostly need keyword and competitor data. Pick Guru if you want historical data, the content tools and more keywords per report. Guru is also the plan that usually carries the longer trial.

A full site audit, a keyword list for the next three months, a gap report against two competitors and a backlink export. I have done all four inside a single afternoon, and I explain the order on this page.
